Represents a reservoir for nutrients and metabolites received from both the non-pigmented ciliary and retinal pigment epithelia.

Hyalocytes are the tissue-resident macrophages of the vitreous body and are considered to play pivotal roles in health and diseases of the vitreous.

They play a role in modulating intraocular inflammation in non-inflamed eyes, there by contributing to intraocular transparency.

VITREOUS DEGENERATION

Myodesopsia (vitreous floaters) refers to the perception of moving spots, threads, or cloud-like shapes in the visual field caused by opacities within the vitreous humor that cast shadows on the retina. These opacities typically arise from aggregation of collagen fibers or other particulate matter within the vitreous gel and are most commonly associated with age-related vitreous changes or posterior vitreous detachment2.
